Fishing is a way to encounter and battle wild pokémon. It requires a fishing rod, and the types of pokémon hooked depends on both the rod used and the location.

There are three types of fishing rod: Old, Good and Super. They must be used when facing a body of water.

Pokémon Brown[]

Fishing rods cannot be used while Surfing. Once cast, an exclamation point will appear over the player's head if a pokémon is hooked, at which point a battle will automatically begin.

If nothing is caught, the phrase "Not even a nibble!" means that the player can try again. If there are no pokémon available in that location with that rod, the message shown is instead: "Looks like there's nothing here."

Fishing Rods[]

  • The Old Rod is given by a man in Castro Valley, in a house in the top left.
  • The Good Rod is given by a man in Route 61, in the house in the very top right.
  • The Super Rod is given by Professor Tim's Aide in the house on Route 52, if the player has caught at least 70 different types of pokémon.

Old Rod[]

The Old Rod exclusively hooks level 5 Magikarp-icon.png Magikarp, in most bodies of water.

Good Rod[]

The Good Rod hooks either level 10 Poliwag-icon.png Poliwag or level 10 Goldeen-icon.png Goldeen, in most bodies of water.

Super Rod[]

The Super Rod catches the largest variety of pokémon.
